I recently took part in a residency with the Yvonne Mokgoro Foundation in partnership with Fine Acts and Nirox sculpture park.

Nine artists were chosen to reimagine democracy through the lens of Ubuntu. Over a couple of days we reflected on our interdependence and importance of recognising our shared humanity. The residency venue was nestled in the heart of what is believed to the birthplace of humanity, the cradle of humankind. The perfect setting to sit with profound topics that have been contemplated for millennia.

We approached the topic from various perspectives and created an open license artwork that would live on the Fine Acts website. This was the Joburg edition of a programme that has been run around the world in cities like London, Istanbul and Sao Paolo.

The residency culminated in an exhibition currently on show at Nirox Sculpture park, opposite 'Then There was Fire'.

My artwork explored a fictional future where aliens were granted the right to vote for the  first time.

“ It's the year 3000 and aliens can vote now. After centuries of armed conflict the galactic confederation held bilateral peace talks between aliens and humans.

A unanimous decision was reached, home is now where one is and not where one comes from.”
